This database of scholarship in jazz theory was created by merging bibliographies compiled by Henry Martin and J. Kent Williams. Initial merging and editing of the Bookends reference file was done in Spring 2007 by Mark David Shoun and supported by a grant from the Music Research Institute of the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Special thanks are due to Chris Wright, computer technician for the UNCG School of Music, and Jonatthan Ashwell, owner of Sonny Software and developer of the Bookends bibliographical database application.

The database will be maintained and updated periodically. Suggestions for additions and corrections should be sent to Kent Williams <jkwillia@uncg.edu> or Henry Martin <martinh@andromeda.rutgers.edu>.

Search Instructions

To search efficiently, first browse the lists of authors and/or keywords, which can be accessed by clicking the links below.

  1. Select a database field to be searched from the "Find in field:" pop-up menu below.
  2. Indicate the maximum number of "hits" (references that match your search criteria) to be returned by the search.
  3. Type a word in the first text field.
  4. Optional: Select a value (AND, OR, NOT) from the first pop-up menu, then type another word in the second text field. Note that you can type only one word in a text field. Thus to find references authored by Henry Martin, you should set the text fields and Boolean menu as shown below. To search the Keyword field for "Early Jazz," type "Early" in the first text field and "Jazz" in the second text field.

    Text field 1
    Boolean menu 1
    Text field 2
    Martin
    AND
    Henry
  5. Optional: Select a value (AND, OR, NOT) from the second pop-up menu, then type another word or phrase in the third text field. For example, to find references by Henry Martin but not by Martin Williams, set the text fields and Boolean menus as shown below.

    Text field 1
    Boolean menu 1
    Text field 2
    Boolean menu 2
    Text field 3
    Martin
    AND
    Henry
    NOT
    Williams
  6. Indicate your sorting preferences by selecting values from the "Sort the references by:" and "Sort direction:" pop-up menus.
  7. Indicate whether you wish to have the references displayed on the screen (in a browser window) or sent to a text file.
  8. Click the Submit Search button.
  9. The list of formatted references will not contain a link to this page. To return to this page after viewing and/or printing a list, use the Back command of your web browser.
